Road Trip

Friday’s Destination: Travelodge, featuring Regina’s longest waterslide!

We were only an hour behind planned departure time, and the only thing we appear to have forgotten is to wash the fruit. Mom and Dad provided a motorcade escort which was awesome. Sudzy supervised. They were planning to accompany us for about 90 minutes but the rain started coming down pretty good and dampened the fun a little too much. Naturally, the rain slowed and stopped shortly after they turned for home.

About an hour in, there was some serious concern from the back of the vehicle regarding how much longer it would be, but now the kids seem to have settled in to their activities and distractions and are ready for the long haul. For his part, Joshie has been eating nonstop!

Andrew and I both love the beauty of the Prairies, and we’re looking forward to the scenery as we make our way west.

Really Quick Update

Lots I’d like to share/journal, but I can’t seem to carve out the time right now.

- We are getting closer to achieving our goal of creating a peaceful home. Slowly our home is getting neater and cleaner, our decorating vision for the house is starting to come together (Andrew started painting the office this weekend!), routines and structure are beginning to take shape. It is encouraging.
- Spring is finally here and it is SO AWESOME. I love being outside with the family, being able to send the kids outside to play, and seeing and talking to our neighbors.
- Joshua is doing super awesome health- and development-wise. We have seen some major changes including- WHOOHOO!- sleeping through the night. He now pretty reliably sleeps until almost 5:00am. Now if only we could get ourselves to bed a little earlier, we could actually start to feel rested ;)
– His OT/PT affirmed that he is doing super awesome. He is totally in the expected range for his age and they don’t need to see him for maybe 6 months, or unless something comes up.
– His fontanelle closed significantly and since then we haven’t had any ear problems, we are starting to see his top teeth when he smiles, and his snoring is much less.
– He strides about so purposefully, arms swinging with great vigour- it seems he might take flight one day!
– We saw our herbalist last week and her findings also confirm what we’ve observed. I’d like to go into it in more detail in another post because it’s fascinating stuff. In a nutshell he is moving out of toxin elimination mode, and now his body is able to actually begin healing! I’m so excited to see what happens over the next six months.
– He has another massage appointment tomorrow. His surgery has been rescheduled for August 4 but it is my hope that he won’t need to keep that appointment.
- Eva is attending art classes and loving it. She is doing great at school in every aspect. She has a great group of friends, she is reading and writing up a storm, she is enjoying herself.
- Micah has become quite close with a friend from preschool and it has been really fun to have playdates with his friend and together with that friend’s family. His older sister is in the same grade as Eva, and the girls get along great too. He also has an younger sister who enjoys being a little mom to Joshua. I have enjoyed developing a friendship with the mom, and it has been so helpful to me to talk with her about raising three kids in this age range.
- Micah is loving spring so much- he can very often be found riding his bike in the driveway. His athleticism continues to blow us away.

That’s all for now… 4:53 comes early.

Not a Baby Anymore

My Joshie is growing up fast!! Soon the older two will give him “kid” status!

I was away from Joshua overnight for the first time this weekend. I have been looking forward to attending our church’s Women’s Retreat again for so long and this year was my year. Andrew was so supportive and even prepared to be in charge for two whole nights but in the end I felt best going only one night. The big kids had a blast with a sitter while Andrew and Joshua drove me up to the camp in Saturday afternoon. Joshua had his last nursing and then listened carefully while I told him I wouldn’t see him again until the next afternoon, uh-huh’ing and nodding his understanding. And he was fine! He never asked Andrew for milk, even though he is used to getting rice milk in a bottle from my Mom. He did fly into a rage at 4:30am when it really sunk in that I wasn’t around, but ran out of steam by 5:30 and went back to sleep for another hour.

The four of them had a great Sunday and were actually early to church! Andrew is Superhusband and Superdad, seriously.

Andrew took this photo right before he and Joshie headed home after dropping me off.

The retreat was so great. I got to sleep through a night! The teaching was so great, and it was wonderful to connect with my sisters in Christ. I have come back with new energy and patience in my parenting, and an extra spring in my step on my faith walk. Retreats = good.

Want to document couple of appointments we had last week. On Monday Joshua saw an ENT (Ear, Nose, Throat specialist). I wanted to understand whether Joshua had any structural differences that would make him more susceptible to infections and hearing issues, especially in light of the low-grade chronic infections he has had since he was about a year. Which actually haven’t been a problem for a few weeks. This changed about the time that I noticed that Joshua’s anterior fontanel had shrunk down significantly. I noticed two shrinkings a few weeks apart. Interesting. Anyway I hadn’t been putting anything in his ears for a few weeks and hadn’t noticed any tugging or sticking of fingers in the ears. And the ENT’s exam confirmed that his ears did not appear to be infected, yippee! She also said it didn’t look like there was fluid in the middle ear, though the ear drum was dull which could indicate that things were in flux in that regard. She did a test whose results would usually indicate fluid, but she was confident in her clinical assessment that there was in fact no fluid. His tonsils weren’t enlarged, and she wasn’t concerned about his adenoids. I had her listen to a recording of his squeaky snoring and she was not terribly concerned. I also explained that when he cries he sounds gaspy when he inhales. She said that there may be some laryngeal collapse and she could refer him to a pediatric ENT who would scope him to find out for sure. I asked what we would do if laryngeal collapse was confirmed and she said probably nothing; he would just grow out of it. So I declined. She is going to refer Josh for another hearing test and that’s it. Not the news I expected- I thought she’d find some kind of structural difference with his Eustachian tubes- but great news!!

Joshua also saw the cardiologist. Another awesome appointment! His stenosis gradient is 25 which is better than last time (it was 40) and firmly in the mild category, PTL! In fact, it doesn’t even require prophylactic antibiotics for dental and surgical procedures as I had understood!!!!! Great, great stuff.

Last week I also took Micah to the doctor to get his ears checked because we have noticed him saying “what?” quite a bit. His ears aren’t infected and don’t have excess wax so she referred him for a hearing test. We’re not overly concerned but we do want to cover our bases.

And that’s some news from the Willms Household.

Journeying

Lots going on here… We’re on quite the journey. I’m not prepared to share all of it publicly, yet anyway. It would be good to share with all of our closest family and friends but difficult to pop out of the trenches for that sort of conversation.

These are rich times, and I am grateful for how we are growing in our togetherness, endurance, and spiritual walk. But these are difficult times too, and we have been doing a lot of hunkering down.

We are postponing the surgery. God closed one door by giving Joshua a bad cold, and opened another by leading us to a massage therapist. She worked on him and taught me the techniques so I can massage him at home. She feels confident that massage can achieve the same results as the surgery. There is no doubt in my mind that He could heal Joshua in this way. Anything is possible with God! I pray that He would be glorified through His work in Joshie’s body. That you out there who don’t believe would see His power at work and check out Jesus. He is so clearly directing our steps, bringing us along according to His plan and His will. I am excited to see where we are led.

We have a number of other health issues in the home and I am confident we will overcome. It’ll be so great to be running at full capacity. We have a strong vision for our home and family, just struggling to find energy, balance, time to plan- the same stuff many of you young families struggle with.

Micah outgrew his little trainer bike and we were excited to give him a shiny new big boy bike today. It’s going to be a fun biking season now that he’ll be able to keep up. Many a Family Bike Ride in our future. So fun!

Surgery Date

Quick note to say that Joshie has a surgery date. April 14. Yes- two and a half weeks from now.

I feel ok about it. I am confident that God will close the door on this if it isn’t the right thing for my son. Which means that in the absence of closed doors- God means for it to happen. And there is no reason for fear or worry! I have a great deal of peace, and I thank Him for that gift.

Readers

Micah and Joshua have both developed an increased interest in books lately. Andrew and I have been reading quite a bit more lately, and it’s interesting, exciting, and perhaps a little disconcerting to see how quickly the kids pick up on what is important to us, and emulate it. Joshua particularly likes to get up in a chair with a book so he can feel like a Big Boy. The boys are becoming closer, and we have seen some such sweet moments.

waiting for preschool to start

A little catchup…

Health: We are still working hard on this aspect. All of us have seen the Herbalist now and a good chunk of our morning routine is now devoted to dispensing supplements! Micah had a month off sugar and did really well. Eva is off cheese until May. Joshua is still avoiding dairy. Andrew is almost done a difficult three weeks with no grains. No wheat. No rice. No corn! Not even beans!! He has been very disciplined though, I’m proud of him. And I am gloriously without restrictions! A little freedom is trouble though, and I had a run in with a large bag of chocolate chips which has led to some tighter fitting pants. Oops.

Good thing we’ve also made fitness a higher priority. Andrew has lost 25lbs and is looking so great. We have both been enjoying the challenge and satisfaction of running regularly. And in this area also the kids have taken note. Every once in a while the kids work “exercise” into their playtime and it is very cute and awesome.

I found out that the body won’t cleanse when pregnant or nursing, so that likely explains why I haven’t noticed obvious changes in my health. That said, I have been feeling pretty energetic despite an average of maybe 5 decent hours of sleep a night. When I run, I like to tell my toxins to get out via my sweat glands. We haven’t noticed any dramatic changes in Eva or Micah’s health. Andrew has definitely seen some positive effects from his regime. We are still seeing improvements in Joshua on the digestive end- he is eating somewhat less which tells me that he is absorbing more nutrients. His tummy is sometimes big and sometimes small. It will be a wonderful day when it stops distending like that!

I have put the wheels in motion for surgery for Joshua. I was praying for clear leading about what direction to take, and wasn’t getting it. So we’re stepping forward in faith and trusting God to open or close doors in this regard.

Josh is still waking at 4:30 or so, but he stirs and cries quite a bit through the first part of the night. His snoring can sometimes become quite bad and he has some apnea as well. Some research has led me to wonder if his adenoids might be inflamed, causing the apnea which disrupts his sleep- and he finally has just had enough by 4:30am. I have a call in with the pediatrician requesting a referral to an ENT. I think I’ll also get a consult with a homeopath and see how that works out. Looks like another batch of appointments coming up :)

Today Mom and I gave each other our birthday presents. We had a spa day together. SO AWESOME. We arrived early and hung out in the mineral bath for a good long while. Then we moved the conversation to the hot tub. We intended to wrap it up with the steam room but it was in the “no steam” part of the cycle so we missed out on that. Next step was a 60 minute relaxation massage. Wonnnnderful! I thought I might fall asleep, but I actually ended up talking childbirth the whole time with the pregnant massage therapist. Mom and I reconvened for a little bit and then we headed in for an organic facial. It was also so great… lots of massage, and when they left us so our masks could dry, I might have snored just a little.

Great afternoon.

We capped it off with some browsing through EQ3 store dreaming about furniture for Team Willms HQ. Getting time to replace the eclectic look with something a little more pulled together.

Speaking of dreaming, time to get some zzz’s.
