A fellow blogger just posted a review of my latest read, Michael Pollen’s The Omnivore’s Dilemma. She is mom to two boys about the same age as our kids, and a journalist by trade. She called it “most fascinating book that I’ve read this year” and “a great read for moms”.
She also says “But the best thing is that the book doesn’t feel like a lecture – it’s just good storytelling that happens to be nonfiction.”
Read her full review here.
As for me, I’ve finished the middle section of the book, which explores the food chain of an organic meal. The first section, which looks at an industrial, processed meal (which he discovered consists mainly of corn), astonished me. When I finished reading the second section, I closed the book gently and said to myself, “beautiful!”.
The third and last section digs into the hunter-gatherer food chain. The author doesn’t just investigate and interview, but actually gets his hunting license and learns how to handle a rifle so that he can hunt the meat portion of this last meal. I’m looking forward to reading the story of this meal and all that Pollen learned through the experience.
